Flamingo Standards

Flamingo Standards
Shell Gordon runs the Flamingo Club as a respectable establishment, complete with unescorted-woman rules and second-tier entertainment. Maddie is thrown out when she comes asking questions.
Context
The club is a front for gambling, prostitution, and drug money. Gordon wants legitimacy but cannot escape the rackets.
Significance
The Flamingo is the symbolic center of Black Baltimore's power economy. It is where Cleo Sherwood worked and where her official story ends.
EZ Kleeners Empire

EZ Kleeners Empire
Ezekiel Taylor built five, then six, dry-cleaning locations using the slogan EZ does it. His businesses are a legitimate foundation for political ambitions.
Context
Taylor is a quiet, generous man with a gift for numbers. Shell Gordon sees him as a potential powerbroker and wants to fund his campaign.
Significance
The dry-cleaning empire supplies more than income: it supplies altered clothes for Cleo and a trail that Maddie will eventually follow.
B'hoy Explains

B'hoy Explains
Donald Weinstein meets Maddie at the Lord Baltimore Hotel and explains Maryland politics: walk-around money, crowded primaries, and the long game Shell Gordon is playing with Ezekiel Taylor.
Context
Donald is Judith's brother, a political operative who hides his private life. His candor is limited but gives Maddie the name she needs.
Significance
The conversation points Maddie toward Ezekiel Taylor and reveals how easily men excuse infidelity as normal business practice.
Ribbon Cutting

Ribbon Cutting
Maddie covers the opening of EZ Kleeners' sixth location and confronts Ezekiel Taylor directly about Cleo Sherwood. He denies knowing her beyond the Flamingo.
Context
Taylor is charm itself, slow-moving and sharp-eyed. Maddie is sure he is lying but cannot prove it.
Significance
The confrontation is a stalemate. Maddie realizes that male solidarity can protect Taylor no matter what she discovers.
Primary Numbers

Primary Numbers
Maddie takes election calls as the primary results come in. Ezekiel Taylor finishes a distant fourth, making clear that he was never a serious contender.
Context
The governor's race is too close to call, and Clarence Mitchell III threatens to organize Negroes for Agnew. The political machine is more fluid than Maddie understood.
Significance
The primary demonstrates that power is not about winning but positioning. Shell Gordon's machine survives the loss.
Vanished to New Mexico

Vanished to New Mexico
Ezekiel Taylor sells his dry-cleaning chain and moves west, blaming his health and the riots. Maddie later cannot find a listed phone number for him anywhere in New Mexico.
Context
Taylor disappears from Baltimore and from history. Maddie will spend years wondering whether he went in search of Cleo or whether someone made him vanish.
Significance
Taylor's exit keeps the central mystery alive. His disappearance marks the end of Shell Gordon's political dream and the beginning of Maddie's unanswerable questions.
